The objects stated in the EFLA Statutes and the Association's first. achievements clearly have something in common with the purpose and activities of FAO in the field of food law. EFLA. sets out basically to promote a better knowledge of food law and to contribute to the development of this branch of law. Accordingly, it stresses the fact that food law is something both specific and interdisciplinary and that its particular aim is to secure the protection of the consumer. This is brought out by the theme chosen for EFLA's first Congress, held at Parma. The transactions of the Congress form the contents of this volume, the general title being: International Food Standards and National Laws. As agreed between FAO and EFLA, the present publication contains the texts of papers and communications given at the Congress, together with a summary of the discussions that followed. The opinions expressed by the authors are personal and in no way commit FAO. It should also be noted that FAO accepts no responsibility for any involuntary omissions or statements based on incomplete information.
