dc.descriptionNumerous countries in Africa are facing a surge in their youth population, coupled with extremely high unemployment rates. Some countries are also experiencing growing youth radicalization, which is increasingly affecting the security environment of entire regions. Although extremists in different areas have varying ideologies, the strategies they employ to enlist youth into their ranks are often similar and draw on a combination of political realities, socioeconomic factors and individual characteristics that render youth vulnerable to recruitment or to negative coping mechanisms in general. This programme contributes to national peace-building processes and helps to reduce poverty by engaging young women and men in productive employment activities that empower them. In particular, the programme focuses on unemployed and under-employed youth, marginalized poor youth, youth at risk of radicalization, youth in conflict-prone areas and former young combatants. Activities promote the peaceful gathering of young people and communities through business development and social development activities, facilitating communication and interchange, and strengthening peace-building processes and social cohesion.
