In February 2023, the LocAl Led Climate AdapTation ChampION (ACTION) Grant Program, supported by CGIAR ClimBeR, partnered with the Ministry of Agriculture and Monze District Council to implement a solar-powered borehole in Hanzila, Southern Zambia. Completed and handed over in September 2023, the borehole greatly enhanced access to water for domestic use, gardening, and livestock in a drought-affected community. However, a 2024 evaluation revealed that households beyond the 1 km service radius remained underserved. In response, a participatory scaling-up initiative began in September 2025, engaging men and women to map preferred locations for new water points and involving a local contractor. Assessments showed the first borehole could not support an expanded network, leading the community to mobilize funds to drill a second borehole. Households contributed USD 80 per tap, enabling successful drilling on November 1, 2025. Community labour and transparent procurement strengthened ownership, improved equitable access to water, and enhanced drought resilience.
