Resumen

Descripción

Malnutrition is a major impediment to the full realization of human potential. Around 20% of people in Sri Lanka are malnourished. The Food and Ag-riculture Organization (FAO) places a lot of emphasis on food security and works towards reducing the rates of under-nutrition and stunt-ing in the country. “FAO is working together with the government, UN partners and other stakeholders on a multi-sectoral approach to nutrition. We are focus-ing on raising awareness and putting the right policies and practices into place to ensure that everyone, and in particular pregnant and lactating women and small children, can have a balanced and nutritious diet.” said Ms Beth Crawford, FAO Representative for Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Issues like food waste and food loss also contribute to the problem. With regard to food loss in particular, esti-mates show that in Sri Lanka 30% of the food is lost before it gets to the consumer.
