In this study, 101 Guadua angustifolia samples of different ages and culm sections were evaluated. Samples were collected in three sites from the Colombian coffee ecorregion: Botanical Garden of the Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira, Nápoles and Bambusal farms. By high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), the contents of carbohydrates (arabinose, fructose, glucose, sucrose and xylose) were determined in extracts obtained using Tappi methods 204 and 264 cm-07. Carbohydrates concentration varied from 0.0034 to 2.4748%; it was established that collection site, age and culm section influence on the carbohydrate contents. The highest sugar percentages were obtained in samples aged two and three years collected at the Botanical Garden, three years in Nápoles, and five years in El Bambusal. Fructose and glucose were the most abundant carbohydrates in the samples collected in both the Botanical Garden and El Bambusal, and arabinose in Nápoles farm. The ideal age for harvesting G. angustifolia is at 48 months, when the species total carbohydrate contents are the lowest.
