Criteria and indicators (C&I) have emerged as a powerful tool in promoting sustainable forest management (SFM). Since the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development of Rio in 1992, several different international processes and initiatives have developed C&I as a framework for SFM. Use of C&I can provide structure and facilitate a common understanding of SFM at the national level. In addition, C&I can help to promote agreement on key issues, create a link to data/results needs and r esources required, serve as a reference framework for policy design, planning and programming, and facilitate the monitoring of results.
