In 2021, the GFCM adopted Resolution GFCM/44/2021/14 on abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded fishing gear, also known as ghost gear. Ghost gear transcends borders and poses environmental and economic risks, including navigational hazards, harm to marine life, and the introduction of non-indigenous species into the marine food web. This factsheet aims at promoting clarity by providing definitions, noting key regulatory aspects and providing context on the phenomenom. Properly addressing this topic will help mitigate wildlife entanglement, protect marine habitats, promote sustainable fisheries management, introduce economic benefits, reduce plastic pollution, and enhance navigation safety.
