People and ecosystems in southern Africa are extremely vulnerable to climate change. Forest and rangeland ecosystems play a vital role in livelihoods by supplying goods and services to rural communities, but they are under threat from climate change and human pressures. While many climate change efforts to date in the forest sector in southern Africa have focused on mitigation (e.g. reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable man agement of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries ? REDD+), countries have recognized the urgency of building resilience and facilitating adaptation to climate change in the sector. National actions can be enhanced through collaborative work among countries in southern Africa. The importance of regional cooperation to support countries in climate change adaptation has been recognized by the parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate C hange, who collectively have called for intensified cooperation.
