The findings are presented of a consultancy conducted in the Seychelles to evaluate the feasibility of gillnets in targeting deepwater snapper resources, mainly Pristipomoides and Etelis. Forty three sets of the nets were made, all in different locations scattered around the edge of the shelf of the Seychelles Plateau. Major conclusions reached were that there is an underexploited stock of deepwater snappers and the possibility exists to commercially harvest that stock using deepwater gillnets. However, to determine exactly the correct gear and mode of operation, it is recommended that a further period of research be conducted using the recommended improved gear and procedures.
