The report describes the results of an analysis made of a survey conducted in 1985 in the Lamu District of Kenya to assess the total number of fishermen, both coastal and inland. Socio-demographic characteristics of the fishermen under investigation included age and sex distribution, household characteristics, family of origin, and secondary occupations of the fishermen. The following characteristics of the fishery were also examined: fishery types; boats; gear; fishing experience; fishing area; and, membership of fisherman society. Some critical notes of the survey design and suggestions for improvement are outlined.
