Indian forestry revolves around social and environmental elements of sustainable forest management. This wide-ranging country outlook paper examines the future for India's forests including future demand for wood and wood products and concluded these will increase by at least three-fold by 2020. The agroforestry sector and imports will remain critical in this regard. Occupation and habitation rights have been granted for forest dependent communities along with the responsibility for conservation of forests. India is also maintaining around 20 percent of forest area within its protected area network to provide ecological security.
