There is good evidence that when meal programmes follow robust food and nutrient-based targets, these can better achieve their nutrition objectives. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP), with the support of the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, have developed a global methodology for countries to design context-specific, food systems-based and feasible nutrition guidelines and standards (NGS) specific for school meal programmes. The global methodology is accompanied by a set of four manuals – one of which is the manual presented here – that guide the operationalization of the NGS at school level and support their impact on schoolchildren’s diets and right to food. This manual offers technical guidance to promote policy coherence, ultimately aiming to create a healthy school food environment.
