The 2025 Revised Edition of Crop Evapotranspiration – Guidelines for Computing Crop Water Requirements marks a major update to FAO Irrigation and Drainage Paper No. 56, a seminal reference in agricultural water management since 1998. Building on the global uptake and proven reliability of the original guidelines—particularly the adoption of the FAO Penman-Monteith method—this new edition integrates advances in science, technology, and field practices to address the evolving challenges of agriculture in the face of climate change, water scarcity, and growing food demand.The updated guidelines reaffirm the foundational concepts while introducing enhanced methodologies for estimating crop evapotranspiration.
