The FAO regional project on “Enhancing Capacity in Codex for Effective Participation and Contribution of Selected Countries in Asia (GCP/RAS/278/JPN)” received an official request from the ASEAN Risk Assessment Center of food safety (ARAC) to provide technical support on a risk assessment of arsenic and cadmium in rice. The project had the virtual discussion with the secretariat of ARAC to discuss on the preparation and the conceptualization of this workshop.
The virtual regional workshop on risk assessment for heavy metal, Case study: Arsenic and Cadmium, was organized from 8 to 12 May 2023 with the two following objectives:
1. to enhance understanding of data requirement for food safety risk assessment especially for arsenic and cadmium in rice for national focal Points in the ASEAN countries under wSEAN Risk Assessment Center (ARAC); and
2. to train ASEAN risk assessors / Scientific Panel Member of ARAC on how to conduct the risk assessment for contaminants according to the methodologies used by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA).
A total of 33 officials in charge of risk assessment of contaminants from nine Asian Countries (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand), ARAC secretariat and ASEAN Health Cluster 4: Ensuring Food Safety (AHC4) representatives participated in the workshop.
The workshop evaluation results revealed that the participants were satisfied and gave excellent ratings for the workshop quality. The knowledge obtained from this workshop was considered very useful for their work. This workshop has enhanced their understanding on how Codex elaborates Maximum Limits (MLs) for contaminants in food, data required for this elaboration and the methodologies JECFA used for conducting risk assessment. The group exercises provided an opportunity for the participants to conduct the risk assessment and allowed them to ask questions to the experts. The workshop also raised awareness of the importance of data contribution from Codex members as participants requested the project to organize workshop related to the GEMS/Food Contaminant Monitoring Database (GEMS/Food database) to better understand the submission and the application of occurrence data of contaminants in foods and feed.
