Resumen

Descripción

The present work was carried out with the objective of knowing which developing phase of white basil (Ocimun basilicum L.) is more affected by water deficit and to study growth disorders and water relations under these conditions. Seeds were put in six-liters-pots containing a substrate made up by soil and organic matter (filter cake) at a ratio 3:1 v/v. Treatments were controlled by the gravimetric method and consisted of varying the quantities of water applied during crop cycle divided in three phases: sowingfirst branch, from the first branch to inflorescence in the main shoot and from here up to inflorescence in the lateral branches (harvest). Water consumption was by phase and totally determined and evaluations were carried out on height and biomass growth and water stage of plants. Responses to different variables allowed to define that the first phase in which water was differentially applied, resulted to be the highest affected by water deficit, which caused important height reductions, a smaller dry mass production and a lower leaf water potential with stomatal conductance decreases.
