The EIFAC Workshop on Recreational Fishery Planning and Management Strategies in Central and Eastern Europe was held in Žilina, Slovakia, from 22–25 August 1995. The Workshop was organized in response to a recommendation of the 18th Session of EIFAC (Rome, 1994) and in preparation for the Symposium on Social, Economic and Management Aspects of Recreational Fisheries to be held in Dublin, Ireland, 11–19 June 1996, in conjunction with the 19th Session of EIFAC. The Workshop concluded that Recre ational Fisheries in Europe were an important factor in the use of inland waters and contributed to domestic fish consumption. There have been considerable changes in the sector through the privatization of the fisheries from the original centrally planned economy. To further promote the interests of the recreational fishery in the sub-region it was recommended: • that a manual of the principles for management of recreational fisheries be prepared by EIFAC. • that data collection systems ar e established and implemented in member countries. • that principles be developed for the economic evaluation of recreational fisheries. • that Fisheries Organizations seek to raise the profile of recreational fisheries with their Member Governments, including the importance of food value.
