The fisheries sector is the second largest employer in Guyana’s agricultural industry, engaging around 11 000 individuals both directly and indirectly. It comprises three sub-sectors: aquaculture, inland fishery and marine fishery. This project focused on the marine fishery, which operates on the continental shelf and is categorized into industrial (shrimp trawlers), semi-industrial (trawl and longline vessels targeting various species) and artisanal (multigear/multispecies) components. The recent discovery of substantial offshore oil reserves in Guyana, estimated at one billion barrels, raised significant concerns about the potential environmental impacts of oil exploitation on marine ecosystems and, by extension, the fisheries sector. This, coupled with the broader context of climate change, underscored the need for a more transparent, reliable and effective data collection and monitoring system.
