Based on official reports, this compendium illustrates how projects funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), designed and implemented by FAO in close collaboration with national counterparts in Latin America and the Caribbean from 2013 to 2023, are concretely contributing to achieving the objectives of the new Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity. These projects have been instrumental in addressing critical biodiversity challenges in the region, where biodiversity is rich but threatened. FAO has worked in partnership with local governments, community organizations and other key stakeholders to develop strategies and actions that not only protect biodiversity, but also foster sustainable development and community resilience.In particular, this document focuses on Target 01 of the Global Biodiversity Framework: Plan and manage all areas to reduce biodiversity loss. This target is fundamental to ensuring that land and natural resources are used sustainably.Through the implementation of projects under an integrated landscape approach, significant progress has been made in land-use planning and management in several countries in the region, including Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. These projects have promoted sustainable agricultural practices, the restoration of degraded ecosystems and the creation of protected areas, contributing to the reduction of deforestation and habitat degradation.
