Reliable and timely statistics are the key to informed decisions, policies and investments in issues related to food and agriculture. FAO is dedicated to collecting, analyzing, interpreting and disseminating food and agriculture statistics that are relevant to decision-making. It also supports member countries in the collection, dissemination and uptake of data to formulate policies and orient investments. Currently, rice consumption in Africa is growing faster than that of any other major staple food crop. Agricultural statistics, particularly on rice production data, are essential to ensure the effective policy planning, implementation and monitoring of national policies on crop development in African countries. The main objective of the project was thus to improve the capacity of CARD countries in the timely collection and provision of reliable statistics on rice-planted area and/or yield.
