To combat malnutrition, we must be able to define it. How much food do we need to be healthy at all stages and under all circumstances of life? Setting nutrient requirements is an important step in helping nations answer this question. The expert consultations conducted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) analyse scientific data to determine nutrient requirements for people throughout the life cycle. Because of changing evi dence based on advancing research in the field, more sophisticated measuring techniques and technology, and reinterpretation of existing data, it is important that the issue of nutrient requirements be examined periodically.
