Resumen
Descripción
ThePapaya ringspot virus(PRSV), a member of the potyvirusthat is transmitted by aphids within thePotyviridaefamily,is the main limiting factor for papaya (Carica papayaL.) andCucurbits worldwide and causes losses of up to 100%. In thisstudy, we conducted research on the genetic diversity of PRSVisolates collected from two locations in the department ofNorte de Santander, Colombia. The analysis was performed bycomparing the nucleotide sequences of the region that encodethe coat protein (CP) of nine PRSV isolates from the Villa delRosario location and 12 isolates from the Campo Hermoso loca-tion. The analysis included three sequences of the CP of PRSVisolates reported in the Colombian departments of Arauca andValle del Cauca. The bioinformatic analysis suggested that thePRSV isolates from the locations in Norte de Santander weredifferent from each other, grouping into different phylogeneticgroups. Anexistence of recombination events in the coat proteinwas observed. This is the first study of PRSV genetic variabilitythat has been conducted at the local level in Colombia.
