FAO calls on countries and territories to enhance vigilance and preparedness in response to the continued spread of foot and mouth disease (FMD) virus serotype SAT1 beyond its historically endemic range. Since the previous FAO alert issued in April 2025 following detection of FMD SAT1 in Iraq, additional outbreaks have been officially reported in several countries and territories across North Africa, West Asia and the Caucasus. The introduction and spread of this exotic serotype into largely naïve livestock populations has resulted in significant economic and production losses and raises serious concerns regarding further transboundary spread. The most immediate risks for FMD SAT1 spread are associated with movements of live animals and animal products, including formal and informal trade, mixing of animals at markets and holding areas, and during transport. Until livestock populations can be protected through vaccination with appropriately matched SAT1 vaccines, rapid and effective biosecurity and surveillance measures at farm, market and border levels remain the primary means of limiting virus spread. FAO urges countries and territories to strengthen awareness, enhance biosecurity and improve preparedness across national, subnational and community levels. Detailed recommendations are provided in the FAO alert.
