Poverty is one of the biggest obstacles to human development. Although much has been achieved by countries in past decades in reducing the number of the poor worldwide, there is still much to be done. Poverty and its consequences – malnutrition, hunger and lack of opportunities – limit human development. Conscious of the interconnectedness of these issues, countries committed through the Sustainable Development Goals to end poverty and hunger by 2030.
FAO’s mandate of eradicating hunger and poverty is at the heart of the Goals. We advocate for a strong focus on rural development and people’s livelihoods to end poverty and hunger and bring about sustainable development. This is why one of FAO’s strategic objectives is to reduce rural poverty.
