This publication is the result of a joint effort by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) in producing a Handbook on small hydraulic structures and devices used in open- channel irrigation distribution systems. There has been general recognition of a need to review the abundant information and experience available on the subject and to condense and dovetail them into a comprehensive and practical Handb ook. Much basic material for the Handbook has been generously provided by National Committees of the ICID and by FAO projects and contacts in Member Countries, while complementary data and information have been assembled from the extensive survey of the literature.
