On 10 June 2022, a possible anthrax outbreak was reported in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. An investigation team visited the affected districts from 22 to 27 June 2022. Regional experts from both the human and animal health sectors were on the team and FAO provided support for the field mission. On 1 August 2022, the Tigray Health Bureau stated that anthrax had been reported in 15 districts of Tigray and that, of the 116 cases reported in humans, seven had died. In the absence of immediate preventive and containment actions on livestock, it was anticipated that the number of human cases would increase. As a result of the security situation, during which most rural households had lost their productive assets, Tigray was also suffering from severe food shortages and widespread malnutrition, encouraging the consumption of meat from animals dying from unidentified causes. The disease was anticipated to pose a serious health risk to the region’s human population. The situation was similar in Kenya and Uganda, where some communities consume anthrax-infected carcasses. The protection of the remaining livestock from diseases such as anthrax was crucial to safeguarding the food and nutrition security, household livelihoods and production capacity of the affected communities.
