| dc.description | The livelihoods of millions of people, particularly the rural poor, depend on secure and equitable access to and control over land, fisheries, forests and other natural resources. Sustainable actions are needed to protect these people’s tenure rights. The Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT) and the African Union’s Framework and Guidelines on Land Policy in Africa (F&G) provide internationally agreed principles to promote better governance of tenure as a step towards eradicating hunger and poverty, supporting sustainable development and enhancing the environment. Through its Land Governance Programme , the European Union has supported 18 countries on the African country and beyond to use these instruments to improve tenure governance. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) used its expertise in the field of land governance to provide transversal support to the programme’s country level projects. This project represented Phase II of FAO’s support, focusing on integrating eight new country projects into the programme , filling gaps identified in Phase I, and promoting the incorporation of principles of responsible tenure governance into national land policy development. | |
