The discipline of forest operations integrates engineering with data analytics and management science to help people and organizations meet their land management objectives. Sustainable Forest Operations (SFO) seeks to meet these objectives across five critical areas of performance: environment, ergonomics, economics, quality optimization, and human dimensions. The magnitude of national and global commitments to reversing deforestation and degradation through reforestation, agroforestry and other interventions requires the implementation of SFO on a massive scale that differs significantly in some ways from operations used in traditional production forestry. New methods and technologies are being developed and deployed for establishing, tending, thinning, and harvesting trees in a forest landscape restoration (FLR) context. Innovation in this field will be critical in achieving global reforestation and restoration targets. Modifications to current practices are needed to facilitate the efficient, effective, and sustainable implementation of large-scale interventions covering millions of hectares. The authors will highlight a variety of innovative strategies and SFO needs from around the world to overcome operational barriers in four areas: nursery operations and seedling production, planting and tending, resiliency to wildfire and disturbance, and finance. Results are discussed in light of the Bonn Challenge, the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, Initiative 20x20 in Latin America, and other efforts.
