dc.descriptionEl documento describe el papel de la investigación y sistematización de experiencias en el desarrollo del proceso concesionario, especialmente lo que concierne a los aportes del CATIE, y cómo estos aportes influenciaron e impulsaron el proceso. Es imposible apreciar el impacto que las concesiones han tenido en la Reserva de la Biosfera Maya sin entender la situación antes de su creación, por esto se hace referencia al proceso histórico de ocupación territorial en Petén y a la situación de la reserva después de su declaratoria, la evolución del proceso concesionario y los principales logros obtenidos a la fecha. Se concluye con una síntesis del proceso de articulación entre ciencia y política, así como una reflexión sobre las lecciones aprendidas para orientar el quehacer de proyectos venideros.
dc.descriptionThis paper describes the role of research and the systematization of experiences in the evelopment of the concession process in the Peten, Guatemala. Special emphasis is given to contributions made by CATIE and the influence they have had in the process. A brief history of territorial occupation in the Petén is provided, as well as a description of the chaotic situation that existed prior to and after the declaration of the Mayan Biosphere Reserve (MBR) as a protected area. This background information is necessary in order to fully understand the evolution of the concession process and appreciate the impact the concessions have had on the MBR. The paper ends with illustrative examples of links between research and existing policies in the MBR. Also an overview of lessons learned is furnished in order to orient future initiatives seeking to improve the concession process.
