Across much of the developing world, reducing the high levels of food loss in the supply chain poses a major challenge. Food losses have negative economic, social and environmental impacts. Food loss also represents the land, water, human labour and non-renewable resources, such as fertilizer and energy, used to produce, process, handle, transport and store food that is not consumed. With the global population increasing, the reduction of food losses in staple food supply chains, such as maize, groundnut, teff and rice, can contribute significantly to improving food security and nutrition at both local and country levels. The project aimed to build capacities in Malawi, Ethiopia and Timor-Leste to identify the critical loss points and their underlying causes in the staple supply chains as a basis for designing and developing strategic actions to sustainably address the problem.
