Resumen
Descripción
In this synthesis paper for the first workstream of the “The state of democracy in Africa: Pathways toward resilience and transformation” project, the authors summarize findings from the first five case studies.
They explore three domains that are proxies for democratic resilience (vertical, horizontal, and diagonal accountability) and identify four interrelated factors that can undermine or strengthen them (from military-civil relations to political economy).
They discuss avenues for additional research, including the legitimacy of Africa’s regional institutions in promoting good governance, the long-term impacts of civil society on democratic backsliding, and the shifting environment for democracy in the face of technological advances.
