The investment case emphasizes the importance of investing in the fish sector to address food security, improve nutrition, and boost the economy. It presents fish as a key source of animal protein and essential nutrients for Malawi's population, particularly in rural areas where poverty and malnutrition persist. The focus is on innovative and sustainable processing techniques to enhance the nutritional quality of fish products, reduce post-harvest losses, and increase their availability in local markets.Two main pathways for investment are documented: solar tent dryers and raised sun-drying racks. Solar tent dryers, through evaporative drying, have demonstrated economic viability and potential for international quality standards. Raised sun-drying racks offer a cost-effective alternative, particularly for smaller-scale processors. Mitigation actions to reduce risks associated with these investments are outlined, including careful location selection, community engagement, capacity development, and adherence to food safety measures.This document also addresses challenges related to social inclusivity, economic affordability for consumers, and environmental sustainability. Strategies to overcome these challenges involve financial instruments tailored for small-scale processors and for micro-, small- and medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs), strengthened governance and capacity development, and a focus on sustainable fish management.In conclusion, investing in fish processing technologies presents a promising opportunity to tackle the multifaceted challenges facing Malawi's fish sector. The recommendations underscore the importance of promoting innovative processing techniques, integrating food safety and nutrition practices, and strengthening capacity and governance to ensure the success and sustainability of these investments.
