The need to increase inland fish production and ensure the long-term sustainability of the sector is of paramount importance for food security, price stabilization and rural livelihood development. This project sought not only to enhance food and nutritional security but also to improve the socioeconomic resilience of rural communities. The development and strengthening of CBF in Ampara District is therefore both a necessity and a strategic investment. The project aimed to establish self-sustaining CBF clusters in selected reservoirs, including Pannalgama, Namal Oya, Himidurawa and Konduwatawana, as a foundation for expansion within the district and replication in other regions.The strategy to achieve these objectives focused on strengthening fisheries societies and co management arrangements, consolidating revolving funds, developing community-based hatcheries and nurseries to ensure sustainable stocking and improving governance, regulation and compliance related to CBF. Through these measures, the project sought to build a resilient, community-driven and economically viable inland fisheries system that contributes to national food security, improved nutrition and sustainable rural livelihoods.
