Modern processing methods and an insatiable market have brought about the phenomenal growth of the prawn industry along the west coast of India in the past 10 years. The crustacean fishery, although it contributes only about 11% of the total marine landings of India, has great importance because of its export potentiality. Exports of crustacean products constituted 90% of all fishery-products foreign-currency earnings in 1969. Continuing discovery of additional grounds gives hope for additional development of prawn fisheries in India. Deep-sea lobster is a promising resource, but its exploitation as hardly begun. Crab is a relatively minor element in India’s crustacean fishery. The lack of large trawlers, personnel, repair yard and shore facilities is hampering growth of the crustacean-fishery industry. Existing management regulation applies only to paddy-field prawn fishery in a single state. Continued research and dissemination of the findings to fishermen and the industry are essent ial to the orderly growth of crustacean fishery in India.
