The Government of Bangladesh extended its jurisdiction over fisheries to 200 miles in 1974 and is now faced with the problem of enforcing controls over fishing operations in the new 200 mile zone. The present report examines the adequacy of national laws and enforcement capabilities and makes general recommendations concerning the type of controls that might be considered. The report recommends the establishment of an interdepartmental committee and the granting of assistance through the Indian Ocean Programme in the drawing up of new legislation for the management of fishing operations in the economic zone.
