Descripción
The red palm weevil (RPW) Rhynchophorus ferrugineus is a major transboundary pest which affects date palms worldwide. This pest likely originated in Southeast Asia. Then, it spread rapidly throughout the Near East. The damage to date palms affects production, farmers’ livelihoods, and the environment. It also threatens coconut palms, and ornamental palms worldwide. It is a quarantine pest in the countries of the Near East, North Africa, Latin America, and other countries. Poor quarantine procedures and early detection difficulties have contributed to the rapid spread of the red palm weevil.The control and management strategies of red palm weevil require strengthened collaborations from countries and institutions at regional and global level. Additionally, innovative solutions that is environmentally friendly are needed to monitor the pest.
