This paper describes the design and implementation of an experimental device aiming to supply local fruits and vegetables to food aid recipients in the area of Montpellier in France. It reports the process that led various actors, including one of the authors of the paper, to get involved in the project and shows that the market device they established was a result of their expectations and constraints. The authors then show that the short food supply chain that has been implemented is characterized by small modifications of the work in the food aid centres of the Restos du Cœur and by an important organizational work undertook by commercial intermediaries. One can finally see in this experiment a hybridization of some innovating organizing activities, intended to relocate food, with some existing organizing activities, marked by commercial intermediation, product homogeneity and low prices.
