dc.descriptionFollowing a decision by the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) at its ninth meeting (Bonn, 19 to 30 May 2008), the CBD Secretariat, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and FAO collaborated in the compilation of a report on the impacts of destructive fishing practices, unsustainable fishing, and illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing on marine biodiversity and habitats. A working document was first prepared that informed a n international Group of Experts, through an Expert Meeting which took place at FAO in Rome from 23 to 25 September 2009. This document is the main output of that meeting and includes: (i) key conclusions on the impacts of unsustainable fishing, destructive fishing practices and IUU fishing on marine biodiversity and habitats; and (ii) elements of policy and management aiming at the mitigation, reduction and, where possible, elimination of the impacts of fisheries on biodiversity a nd habitats, to be considered by Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 14) and the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP 10) in 2010.
