According to the State of the World Fisheries and Aquaculture (SOFIA) report, global aquaculture production reached an all-time record in 2020, Asia dominating its continuous growing till today. The development of a sustainable aquaculture industry is a central goal of Indonesia Blue Economy Roadmap 2023–2045, reflecting the country's commitment to achieving environmental, economic and social sustainability. A key element in realizing this vision is improving management of Aquatic Genetic Resources (AqGR) used in aquaculture and the development of improved seed varieties. Since the country presents a huge diversity of farmed species, including at least 41 species such as the white leg shrimp, the Nile tilapia, the catfish, the common carp, and the milkfish.This project aimed to support Indonesia in applying a systematic approach to increase national capacities and knowledge through i) the evaluation of current policies, practices, infrastructure and resources; ii) the development of a national registry of farmed and wild stocks of cultured species and identifying genetic resources requiring intervention for their sustainable use; iii) building key stakeholders capacities in AqGR management; iv) the preparation of a national strategy, using the FAO’s Global Plan of Action (GPA) for the Conservation, Sustainable Use and development of AqGR for Food and Agriculture to identify urgent and key strategic priorities and actions.
