Rice is the Democratic People's Republic of Korea major grain, accounting for about 35 percent of the total cultivated area Average production of rice during 2012 2017 was 2 512 million tonnes amounting to 45 3 percent of the total food (in cereal equivalent) produced in the country A major natural constraint to expanding agricultural production in the country is the limited availability of arable land, owing to the country’s mountainous terrain In order to address this issue, the Government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea pursues the policy of land reclamation in tidally inundated lowland along the country’s coastlines Over the past decade, vast areas of tideland, such as Taegyedo and Kumsong Tideland, have been reclaimed and turned into fertile land.
