Resumen
Descripción
This publication, by a world leader in animal nutrition and feeding, deals with the contribution of foliage from forage trees to animal production in the tropics. The first chapter describes the general framework of feed resources and the contribution the tree foliage can make in production systems. Chapter 2 explores the nutrition, physiology and metabolism of ruminants as a basis of understanding how tree foliage can contribute to improving rumen efficiency to meet requirements for productiv e functions. Chapter 3 explains various possibilities of manipulating rumen function through the use of supplements and gives examples of how these interventions have increased animal performance in practical situations. In chapter 4 the specific contribution of these tree foliage to ruminant nutrition is analysed from the points of view of tannin content, chemical characteristics, rumen undegradable and soluble protein fractions and micro nutrients. The use of tree foliage as a source of byp ass proteins and methods for measuring bypass protein levels in foliage are contained in chapter 5.
