dc.descriptionThe Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has embarked on supporting countries to improve the capacity of their veterinary services through the implementation of an in-service training programme that targets frontline veterinary staff, mentors and trainers. This two-page document has been created to raise awareness and gain support for the Frontline In-Service Applied Veterinary Epidemiology Training (ISAVET) programme before it launches at the national level in 14 countries in 2020. The programme was created in order to combat the emergence and spread of animal diseases, zoonoses, and related threats such as antimicrobial resistance, which all pose a serious threat to global health security. The programme is designed to help frontline veterinary staff to fill in the gaps in the animal health sector to prevent, detect and respond to outbreaks in a timely manner and therefore protect human health, reduce animal losses, assure consumer protection, promote safe trade and improve livelihoods.
