The Green Cities joint communiqué signed by FAO and UN-Habitat and adopted at the First International Green Cities Conference on 15 October 2025 sets out a shared vision for greener, healthier and more resilient cities. It calls for stronger integration of urban, peri-urban and rural systems, the creation of inclusive and healthy environments for all, and the use of innovation, data and knowledge to drive transformation. The communiqué demonstrates a commitment to unlocking finance for cities, strengthening partnerships across governments, international organizations, financial institutions, civil society and the private sector, and advancing a global movement in which cities of every size and context contribute to sustainable, inclusive and resilient futures. Within this collective effort, the FAO Green Cities Initiative and the FAO Green Cities Network are recognized as key platforms to connect and support municipalities worldwide, working in synergy with UN-Habitat’s mandate and other global and regional city networks to deliver transformative action and shape the future of sustainable urban living.
