dc.descriptionDuring 1986 screening of advanced bean lines for efficiency at low levels of P and for tolerance to high levels of Al saturation continued. A review of data from 8 yr. of screening indicated that the genetic variability of beans for these 2 characteristics is low. Furthermore, the data suggest that efficiency and tolerance are determined by separate mechanisms. The principal group screened was comprised of small black- and red-seeded materials of growth habit types II and III, adapted to Central America and the Caribbean. Mean yields of lines of growth habits II and III showing outstanding performance at low P levels and high Al saturation are included. (CIAT)
dc.descriptionLa seleccion de lineas avanzadas de frijol por eficiencia a bajos niveles de P y tolerancia a altos niveles de saturacion de Al continuo durante 1986. Una revision de datos de 8 anos de seleccion indico que la variabilidad genetica de frijol para estas 2 caracteristicas es baja. Ademas, los datos sugieren que la eficiencia y tolerancia estan determinadas por mecanismos separados. El principal grupo seleccionado estaba constituido por materiales de semilla pequena negra y roja de los habitos de crecimiento tipos II y III, adaptados a America Central y el Caribe. Se incluyen los rendimientos prom. de las lineas de habitos de crecimiento II y III, los cuales indican un comportamiento sobresaliente a bajos niveles de P y alta saturacion de Al. (CIAT)
