The variety of fishing techniques in the Indian Ocean region is great; they vary from the most modern, brought in by fishing craft of the industrialized countries, to the most antique, used in countries where traditional methods have changed little over the centuries; there is, however, not much detailed information. Almost as varied as the techniques of fishing are the craft used in the fisheries; in much of the region simple craft (like the catamaran) consist of logs tied together or logs holl owed out. For comparatively small investment, fishing techniques can be improved by using modified or alternative techniques. Survey teams should study the varieties and the importance of gear now used. Regional technological centres might serve as focal points for information about gear, craft, port facilities, three such centres might be considered, one for East Africa, one for countries on the Gulf of Oman, Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and one for Southeast Asia. New gear should be demonstrated whenever fishery-assessment activities take place.
