In 2018, the Government of Ethiopia developed a ten-year National Forest Sector Development Programme (NFSDP) as a roadmap to guide resource mobilization, policy implementation and forestry actions. The programme is aligned to other national targets and commitments to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG), following the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This strategy is expected to help Ethiopia’s transition to a green growth strategy that replaces energy-intensive construction materials, such as steel or concrete, with high-quality wood-based infrastructures. The NFSDP focuses on environmental and institutional development, sustainable forest production and value chains, environmental functions, forests and rural livelihoods, and urban greening.
