The population growth rate and urbanization rate in Africa have created unprecedented challenges in the already existing problems of urban poverty, overcrowding conditions, food insecurity and inadequate provision for water, sanitation, drainage and healthcare. Coupled with the anticipated increase in temperature and erratic rainfall patterns and the total urban population surpassing the rural population by 2035, African cities are among the most vulnerable to climate change, urban poverty and food insecurity.
To counter the growing vulnerabilities, build resilience and adapt to climate change, an evidence-based decision support system through geospatial technologies is increasingly used in developmental planning (e.g., through multi-criteria analysis, weighted sum model). However, access to the technical and technological advancements in geospatial tools, technologies, and public platforms and forums to interact and share information and expertise in Africa is lacking.
To improve knowledge sharing on the use of geospatial technologies in support to sustainable urban and agricultural development, the virtual event “Geospatial for Sustainable Agriculture and Urban Development” was organized on September 15, 2022. This virtual event gathers 90 participants from 39 countries and 52 organizations to share experiences and strengthen collaboration on using geospatial information and resources for sustainable urban environments, agriculture, and food security in Africa. The Director of the Land and Water Division at FAO gave the opening remark for the event and highlighted FAO’s commitment to improving food security, sustainable agriculture and urban forestry through evidence-based decision-making and geospatial tools and technologies.
