In May and June 2023, severe flooding in Serbia had a devastating impact in 56 municipalities and cities, mostly in central and south Serbia. On 19 June 2023, the Government declared a state of natural disaster in the municipalities affected, where floods had damaged regional and local infrastructure, public facilities, family residential facilities and, in particular, agricultural crops, inputs and machinery. Most of the numerous farming households in the 56 municipalities to be directly impacted by the floods were highly vulnerable small farmers with low incomes, engaged in primary agriculture production. The loss of livelihood as a result of the floods presented a direct threat to food security, increasing the risk both of further deterioration of socioeconomic status and of poverty.
