The achievement of food and nutrition security is dependent on the ability of a country to meet its population’s food and nutrient needs The population of the Philippines has been growing at an average annual rate of 1 72 percent, while demand for rice has increased by about 0 69 percent in the last five years, based on the records of the Philippine Statistics Authority ( Since 2006 average family expenditure on food has risen incrementally, accounting for 42 8 percent in 2012 At the same time, agricultural commodity consumption has increased, with the annual per capita consumption of agricultural commodities reaching 243 kg in 2012 From 2006 to 2013 the damage and losses to the agriculture and fishery sectors caused by typhoons amounted to about PHP 146 billion shifts in the country’s weather patterns and extreme weather events continue to pose a significant threat to achieving food security The vulnerability of the agriculture sector puts the country’s food, nutrition and economic securities at risk The agriculture sector also generates income for one third of the country’s total labour force The overall aim of the project was to formulate a food production allocation strategy that would identify an action plan with measures and policy recommendations designed to achieve food security The project would provide DA with data and analyses regarding the main food consumption patterns of Filipinos, and the country’s current production of major commodities, assisting DA to formulate plans and programmes that respond to the needs of the people, above all in determining the volume of food needed in the future to support the growing population.
