In recognition of the theme for World Food Safety Day 2026, "From burden to solutions: safe food everywhere," this Codex in Action story outlines how, when implemented, Codex texts can support countries to reduce the burden of foodborne disease. In particular, this story takes the top five food safety hazards as revealed in the release of the updated WHO estimates of the global burden of foodborne disease, produced under the guidance of the Technical Advisory Group, the Foodborne Disease Burden Epidemiology Reference Group (FERG). It explains, with examples from Member Countries, how the texts adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission protect consumer health and facilitate trade.
