| dc.description | Secure tenure and effective land governance are strongly related to social, economic and ecological development. The eradication of hunger, malnutrition and poverty, enhanced economic and social development, and the sustainable use of natural resources depend primarily on how people, communities and other players gain access to land, fisheries and forest resources. The Government of Kenya appreciates the centrality of land to the attainment of all three pillars of its Vision 2030. The Constitution of Kenya 2010 also provides a legal basis for the recognition and protection of land rights and secure equitable access to land, and eliminates gender discrimination in the use, ownership and management of land. However, the protection of land related rights remains elusive in arid and semi arid land, which constitutes over 80 percent of the land area in the country. Recognizing land as a structural factor to address food security, poverty reduction and agricultural development, the European Union, in partnership with FAO , commissioned a Land Governance Programme in Kenya in September 2016. | |
